Author: New Homegrown Recipe Contest Offers Gardeners a Chance at an “Edible Shopping Spree”

Holland Bulb Farms, a leading online flower bulb retailer, has teamed up with the Bulb Blog to announce their first ever Homegrown Recipe Contest. This contest promises to give a “jumpstart” to six contestants’ edible gardens this year by awarding winners with gift cards toward the Holland Bulb Farms website. This contest, which began on Friday, January 28th and runs until Monday, February 28th, encourages gardeners and cooks alike to submit their favorite recipes. The only requirement is that each recipe must include at least one ingredient which can be grown from a product found on the Holland Bulb Farms website. The contest is broken up into two categories: Fruits and Vegetables. Participants are allowed to submit up to five entries per category but are limited to only one award. First, second, and third place winners will be chosen in each category, receiving a $ 100, $ 50, and $ 25 gift card to Holland Bulb Farms (respectively). These winners will be announced on Friday, March 4th, 2011.
In a society of increased health-consciousness and financial uncertainty, home gardening is on the rise. Therefore, the founders of the contest felt it was a good way to reward these hard-working gardeners and also share their carefully developed recipes. Jennifer Brandt, one of the main developers of this contest says, “People of all ages are becoming more and more interested in healthy eating and therefore, they are eating more fruits and vegetables. Along with that, they are wanting to know where their food comes from, so a great way to achieve both things is to eat and grow your own vegetables! The idea behind the Homegrown Recipe contest was to bring that idea to life and present a fun way to get people interested in growing edible products…as a child of a serious vegetable gardener and home cook I know people take pride in their gardens, as well as their recipes – what a great and fun combination!”
Recipes can be submitted through the Bulb Blog, an online source for gardeners. This blog covers subjects relating to many types of gardening and also encourages comments and questions from its readers. A complete list of rules and guidelines can also be found there.

Springville Lavender Gardens has just opened to the public. The gardens are located 16 miles east of Porterville and about one mile before the town of Springville on Highway 190. In the past two years, the owners, Linda and Gary Starr, have converted fields of cow pasture into a thriving flower farm. Several varieties of English lavender are blooming now and other varieties will be blooming soon. Bouquets of fresh and dried lavender are available for purchase.
Besides lavender, many roses, perennials, and herbs are also grown. Linda said, “ I have always dreamed of having a garden I could share with others; where people could come to relax and enjoy the beauty of nature”. Lavender products, floral arrangements, and botanical gifts can be found in the garden’s studio, aptly named, Mountain View Cottage. Spectacular views of the surrounding mountains can be seen from the gardens. Nature lovers and gardeners alike will delight in all the flowers in bloom, and the many birds and butterflies seen this time of year. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes when you visit, so you can take advantage of all the gardens have to offer. You can take a self-guided walk of the gardens or special tours for groups can be scheduled by appointment.
Springville Lavender Gardens is open Wednesday through Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. The gardens are located at 34515 Highway 190 just before the town of Springville. FARM MART Distributors recently met with key farm and ranch category manufacturers in Denver at the annual FARM MART Vendor Showcase. The meeting at the Summerfield Suites Hotel included individual meetings between Distributors and attending vendors targeting farm and ranch, and garden retailers.
Brendan Sullivan, managing director for FARM MART and Joy Smith, PRO Group merchandise manager, led the Distributors in group discussions about new products and marketing tools, along with the FARM MART advertising program.
Key product categories marketed by FARM MART Distributors include animal health, feed & seed, fencing, lawn & garden, pet supplies and farm hardware.
“One of the main topics of discussion at the FARM MART meeting was how the growth of hobby farming is impacting the farm and ranch industry,” Sullivan said. He added that Carol Ekarius, an author and contributing editor for Hobby Farms magazine, gave a presentation about marketing to hobby farmers. Sullivan mentioned that several of the executives representing FARM MART Distributors at the meeting are hobby farmers themselves.
“The face of the farmer continues to change,” Sullivan said. “There is a shift toward hobby farms and people with larger amounts of disposable income owning farms. They are very internet savvy and they are starving for knowledge. As Distributors and as Retailers, we need to get ahead of the curve both from a merchandising and advertising standpoint to help meet consumers’ needs and help fill that void of knowledge. It’s a tremendous opportunity.”

About the time that Chemical Ag spokespeople were chiding Michelle Obama for promoting home-grown organic food with her White House garden, compost from the Rodale Institute farm was landing on a new organic garden right in front of U.S. Department of Agriculture headquarters.
Since he jackhammered an asphalt walkway just off the National Mall in Washington, D.C., in front the USDA’s Whitten building on Lincoln’s birthday, USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack has taken a personal interest in developing the new People’s Garden.
Delivering the compost was Jeff Moyer, farm director for Rodale Institute, Kutztown, PA. “Compost is a big part of what makes organic farming work so well,” he said. “We’re happy to donate a truckload of high-quality compost to biologically jump-start this welcome change in the USDA’s front lawn. The Secretary wanted the garden to be certified organic, so all the inputs–including compost–need to conform to the National Organic Program standards.” Moyer chairs the USDA’s National Organic Standards Board, which provides input from the organic sector to the department’s organic program.
Organic farming is an integrated systems-approach to sustainable agriculture that Moyer and thousands of other farmers have been improving for decades. The Institute is the birthplace of the organic movement in America, and its researchers have documented that organic farming techniques offer the best solution to global warming and famine.
“Our 60 years of research show that organic farming is the single most significant and immediate step we can take to curtail the potentially devastating effects of global warming,” said Institute CEO Dr. Timothy LaSalle. “Organic farming delivers other environmental services, improves human health and builds biodiversity above and below the soil line to produce more nutrition per acre. Building soil organic matter saves soil, improves water quality and is the building block for greater nutritional density.”
